Stories of Friends and Pious People When Hears Recitations of the Qur'an

Imam An-Nawawi quoted a hadith narrated by Ad-Darimi which tells of Umar bin Khattab's friend who made recitations of the Qur'an as an instrument to remind him of Allah. Umar's friend ra brought reciters among friends to recite the Qur'an. Once upon a time, Umar bin Khattab ra's friend asked Abu Musa Al-Asy'ari ra's friend who was known as the owner of the voice of the Prophet Dawud as to recite the Qur'an.

Imam An-Nawawi included this story in his work At-Tibyan fi Adabi Hamalatil Qur'an. Imam An-Nawawi in a quote from Ad-Darimi tells how Umar's friend made the reading of recitations of the Qur'an a solemn moment to remember Allah. Even more than solemn in hearing recitations of the Qur'an. Not a few former pious people died because of their solemnity while listening to recitations of the Qur'an.

وروى الدارمي وغيره بأسانيدهم عن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه أنه كان يقول لأبي موسى الأشعري ذكرنا ربنا فيقرأ عنده القرآن والآثار في هذا كثيرة معروفة وقد مات جماعات من الصالحين بسبب قراءة من سألوه القراءة والله أعلم

It means, "Imam Ad-Darimi and other hadith priests narrated the sanad from Umar bin Khattab's friend ra. Sayyidina Umar ra asked Abu Musa Al-Asyari's friend who had a melodious voice to read the Qur'an, 'Remind us to God.' Abu Musa Al-Asyari's friend then read the Al-Qur'an in the assembly of Umar bin Khattab ra. History regarding the recitation of the Al-Quran (and those who listen to it) are numerous. Many pious people also died because they heard reciters who were asked to read the Qur'an for them. Wallahu a'lam," (An-Nawawi, 2020 M/1441 H: 97).

Having a reciter in a forum to hear recitations of the Qur'an is not a far-fetched matter. Rasulullah saw himself set an example in this matter. Imam An-Nawawi quotes the hadiths of Bukhari and Muslim who narrate that Rasulullah SAW asked his friend Abdullah bin Mas'ud to read the Quran to Rasulullah SAW himself. The reading of recitations of the Qur'an by Ibn Mas'ud's friend brought tears to the eyes of Rasulullah saw when Ibn Mas'ud's friend arrived at Surah An-Nisa verse 41.

فقد صح عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال قال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : اقرأ علي القرآن فقلت يا رسول الله أقرأ عليك وعليك أنزل قال إني أحب أن أسمعه من غيري فقرأت عليه سورة النساء حتى إذا جئت إلى هذه الآية فَكَيْفَ اِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ اُمَّةٍ ۢ بِشَهِيْدٍ وَّجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلٰى هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ شَهِيْدًا) قال حسبك الآن فالتفت إليه فإذا عيناه تذرفان رواه البخاري ومسلم

Meaning, "An authentic hadith from the friend of Ibn Mas'ud ra states, 'Rasulullah said to me,' Ibn Mas'ud, read the Qur'an for me.' I replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, where can I read the Al-Qur'an to you. Whereas the Qur'an was revealed to you?' 'I like to hear the recitation of the Qur'an from other people,' replied the Prophet Muhammad. I also started reading Surah An-Nisa. But when my recitation reached 'Fa kaifa idzā ji'nā min kulli ummatin bi syahīd. Wa ji'nā bika 'alā hā'ulā'i syahīdā,' (Surah An-Nisa verse 41), 'What will (the condition of mankind be on the Day of Judgment) if We bring a witness (apostle) from every nation and We bring you ( Prophet Muhammad) as a witness over them?' The Messenger of Allah interrupted, 'Enough of this!' I turned to him and I saw tears dripping from the eyes of the Prophet,'” (HR Bukhari and Muslim),” (Imam An-Nawawi, 2020 M/1441 H: 97). Reciting recitations of the Al-Qur'an is an Islamic art (among other things a combination of the art of singing and the beauty of the texts of the Al-Qur'an) which has supernatural power and provides a spiritual experience for its listeners.
